What is rake and how does it work?
Rake is the amount of money taken from each pot. This is the house money. Most card rooms, online and off, take a small percentage of the pot for hosting the poker game.
Most poker rooms do not take rake if there is no flop, hence the saying "no flop, no drop". Every poker room has different rules on how much the rake is. Most rooms do not take over $5 per hand regardless of the size of the pot. You should always check the rake percentages at the room before playing so you know what to expect.
The percentage of rake taken from you is determined by how many people are in the hand. If there are 2 people involved in the hand and the total rake taken was $1, you each would of contributed .50c to the rake.
What is rakeback?
Rakeback is when a poker room offers you, the player, a percentage of your rake back to you. For instance if you raked $10 in one day, and that poker room offers you 30% rakeback, you would receive $3 cash back into your player account. Most rooms pay the rakeback into your player account monthly, some do it daily or weekly.
